The Enforcer and Sudden Impact are now available as a two disc Action Double Feature Blu-ray. These are the third and fourth Dirty Harry movies starring Clint Eastwood. If you like Clint Eastwood cop movies, this is a pretty good deal; The Enforcer and Sudden Impact are decent enough but memorable only for featuring Harry Callahan. The Enforcer very much feels like a made-for-TV movie. Special features are the same as the Deluxe Edition DVD. The first two Dirty Harrys are also available as a two-fer Blu-ray.
Harry Calahan rescues four hostages in a convenience store and is demoted to personel. The SFPD is undergoing major changes. Dirty Harry is returned to Homicide and saddled with the first woman detective in the department (Tyne Daly). Callahan is after a group of white terrorists who robbed an arms warehouse and killed one of Harry's cop friends -the second dead cop is never brought up.
Dirty Harry of course gets a lot of interference from the inept police captain, including getting suspended, as he tries to find the terrorists and avenge his friend.
The writing is here is banal at best and always shooting for a catch phrase that never comes. It is also hard not to giggle at expressions like "the man", "honky", and "pig" and revolutionaries doing it "for the people, man!" The music is reminiscent of the funk jazz stuff used in seventies adult fare.
It is a bit hard to believe The Enforcer was released in 1976. The plot is the kind of stuff popular in TV cop dramas from the late sixties and very early seventies. The only thing missing is the flower-power VW bus although the flame covered Ford comes close.
The little old lady porn sweatshop is an original touch.
Special Features include Commentary by director James Fargo; The Business End: Violence in Cinema (30 minutes); Harry Callahan/Clint Eastwood: Something Special in Films (6 minutes) and a trailer gallery
