If you are a monster movie or fantasy movie fan the name Ray Harryhausen is familiar. The king of stop motion animation, known for Earth vs the Flying Saucers and The 7 Voyages of Sinbad is the magician behind Jason and the Argonauts. Jason and the Argonauts Blu-ray is a very good version of this stop motion classic and a really fun movie too. The picture quality is superior to what was available before but do not expect everything to be 100% crisp.
Jason, son of the deposed king of Thessaly, sets out to find the Golden Fleece. This will allow his people to believe again and overthrow Pelias the tyrant king. The gods are of course watching over all of this and have been and will be pulling some of the strings. Hera is allowed to help Jason but only 5 times. Jason finds some brave and courageous men to accompany him. The Argonauts include Hercules and, unknown to Jason, Pelias' son Acastus.
Like any quests worthy of the title, this one is not without its perils. From the famous bronze Titan Talos, the Harpies, and the seven headed hydra to the most famous stop motion animation scene ever; the battle with the skeleton army
A few things do not quite make sense in Jason and the Argonauts. One is where did Jason and his men find the fine uniforms they wear when they land at Phineas' island. A couple of continuity problems also surface including where Hylas is relation to Hercules and the Talos statue.
None of this gets in the way of a good action mythological monster quest movie like this one. Yes, some of the sfx now look hoaky but they still work.
Special features on Jason and the Argonauts Blu-ray Commentary with Director Peter Jackson and Visual Effects Artist Randall William Cook; Commentary with Ray Harryhausen and Film Historian Tony Dalton; Original Skeleton Fight Storyboards; The Harryhausen Legacy Documentary; Interviews with Ray Harryhausen by John Landis
