Practical Magic Blu-ray
Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman
Directed by Griffin Dunn
Originally released 1998
Warner Brothers 2010

If you are in the mood for a very odd comedy both Practical Magic and Witches of Eastwick are now on Blu-ray. Both these movies are well made and quite entertaining though I do not see the point of Blu-ray in this case aside from fitting two good witch comedies on one disc. The movies do not look particularly better and there are no special features.

Practical Magic is a little messy and haphazard plot wise but quite fun. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are Sally and Gillian Owens. The Owens are the descendants of a Salem era witch who cursed that any man who fell in love with an Owens woman would die very young. This happened to their father and to Sally s husband. The sisters grew up with their witch aunts (Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest) and both learned magic.

When Gillian gets in trouble Sally rushes to her rescue and accidentally kills Gillian s boyfriend. Gillian talks Sally into bringing him back from the dead and this has nasty repercussions when Sally kills him again.

Then the dream guy Sally described when she was a little girl shows up looking for Gillian's ex.

This is a very unusual and offbeat movie but not the romantic comedy it tries to be. Practical Magic is not a great movie but it is fun to watch. The better of the two films on this Blu-ray is Witches of Eastwick.
