Ramona and Beezuz is an excellent family movie DVD. It tells a good story, the kids are not Hollywood movie types but real kids, and there is something in Ramona and Beezus for everybody in the family. Also, unlike many such movies the main characters here are girls. The movie is based on the Beverly Cleary books.
Ramona (Joey King) is a nine-year-old girl. She has an older sister named Beezus (baby talk for Beatrice), a baby sister, and two loving parents. She is the kind of kid who gets in trouble because of her overactive imagination and energy. She is best friends with Howie but also has a thing for him.
This movie works not only because Ramona is not a precious Hollywood movie kid but a believable character. The movie is basically about a ten-year-old trying to be a good kid and coping as best she can with things like dad losing his job and always coming across as the school misfit. She is a loving, supportive little girl who gets in trouble because she has a good heart and a great imagination.
Beezus is the older sister now in high school experiencing having a first boyfriend. She is also a good kid but not icky sweet.
Ramona and Beezus is a nice blend of reality and imaginary. The movie allows for Ramona's very vivid and original imagination to really comedy to life. At the same time director Elizabeth Allen does not overdo the green screen and animation special effects, keeping this family DVD grounded in reality.
The movie has a couple of sad parts but that only makes it that much better.
Thiis is an excellent family movie. Even the requisite happy ending is nicely realistic.
Special features on the Ramona and Beezus DVD are a gag reel, deleted scenes, My Ramona with author Beverly Cleary, and Show & Tell Film School - Tips and tricks on how kids can make their own movie.
