Three Kings is a serious and graphic variation on Clint Eastwood s Kelly s Heroes Soldiers go behind enemy lines to steal gold bars. This time the action takes place immediately after the first Bush war in Iraq. Special features on Three Kings Blu-ray are commentary tracks, making of and various featurettes.
George Clooney is Archie Gates, a Special Forces guy now assigned to accompany a journalist around Kuwait and Iraq. He learns of a gold cache and he and three other soldiers decide this is a great get rich quick scheme. Of course, things are not that simple.
Three Kings mixes the adventure war movie with a more serious political and philosophical commentary on war and man. For example, the soldiers have to decide between saving civilian lives or the gold. There is also a very clear commentary on Bush asking Iraqis to rebel against Saddam and then doing nothing to support them.
The humor here is dark, biting, and very cynical. It is surprising a movie that points out America's hypocrisy so often has been this successful.
This movie's one weakness is its ending.
