An Affair to remember Blu-ray Digibook
Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr
Directed by Leo McCarey
Originally released 1957
Warner Home Entertainment 2011

An Affair To Remember harkens back to a time when romantic dramas were about grown-ups and these grown-ups were able to express themselves. This is a classic starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr as perhaps star crossed lovers. An Affair to Remember Blu-ray features 2:35:1 widescreen to render the Cinemascope. Hard core fans of the movie will probably be disappointed by how the colors are really not as vivid as they can be on Blu-ray. The film even has a somewhat colorized feel at times.

Grant plays Nicki Ferrante, a famous bachelor who is on his way to be married to a very rich girl. Deborah Kerr is Terry McKay a former lounge singer who is taking a trip before marrying her long-time industrialist boyfriend. The two meet accidentally aboard ship and start spending some time together.

The first half of the movie ends with the ship arriving in New York and Nicki and Terry promising to meet again in six months at the top of the Empire State Building to see if what they have is the real thing.

The second half opens with Terry and Nicki working hard to earn a living. Six months go by and it is time for the reunion. Things get complicated.

An Affair to Remember has aged pretty well. The only jarring exception is the musical numbers, especially the ones with the kids.

There are many superb scenes in this movie including Nicki and Terry s first kiss. Movie fans will no doubt pay attention to how McCarrey uses the ship s stairway to great effects.

An Affair to Remember is of course the background movie in Sleepless in Seattle.
