There are only so many ways that you can create a detective fiction: Hard boiled, cozy, procedural or some combination of the three. The Glades starring Matt Passmore (McLeod's Daughters) as relocated Chicago detective Jim Longworth is a mix of cozy and procedural. Take a splash of Monk, a dash of The Mentalist, a bit of Lie to Me and a setting Dexter would be comfortable in, and you have the basic recipe for The Glades. The show also includes the compulsory additions of a voice of reason/doubter of the protagonist's wisdom in the character of Carlos Sanchez the medical examiner and family man who is frequently less than impressed with Longworth. Carlos is played to perfection by journeyman mystery series actor Carlos Gomez.
Like all great detectives there must be a feminine component (even Holmes had “that woman!”) and Longworth is no exception with Callie Cargill played by Kiele Sanchez (Lost) as a medical student/full time nurse, mother of a teenaged boy and married to a con currently serving a prison sentence. Callie is alternately amused, intrigued, hot for, fascinated and frustrated by Jim Longworth and while she is not always on the same page as he she is not above helping him as long as it doesn't interfere with patient care.
All the characters in The Glades are well drawn and strongly written. As with all mysteries of any quality the plot driven episodes are usually two pronged with a main story and secondary story that is lighter and frequently part of a series story arc developing the relationships between the characters. As a detective on the Florida State Police force Longworth gets to participate in a wide variety of murders in different communities which offers the series an opportunity to get the flavours of Florida while solving murders.
While not overly original The Glades is entertaining and often amusing it is definitely worth a look.
Special features on The Glades The Complete First Season are 2 commentary tracks, deleted scenes, Sunshine State of Mind: Casting The Glades, a Location for Murder: Filming The Glades, and a gag reel.
