Lego and Star Wars come together in this animated show. The story is about a team of Padawans who go on a field trip with Yoda. While out, they meet Ian (a.k.a. young Han Solo) and discover a Sith agent in disguise who is stealing secret battle plans. From that point on they have a series of adventures, with C3P0 and R2D2, Jabba the Hut, and other recognizable Star Wars names.
Let me start out with the good stuff about this family DVD and Blu-ray set.: the animation in this is great – true to both Star Wars and Lego. It was great to see the way that this was interpreted. The story was great for my kids. They laughed at the jokes and really enjoyed the different scenes in iconic places (including the space bar). All four of my kids (ages from young to teenager) found something interesting and entertaining in this show. It made them want to see the original version.
For the not so good stuff: this all really has to do with me – I didn’t appreciate some of the humour – such as cameo appearances of both Lego Darth Vader and Lego George Lucas. This seemed awkward and out of place in the rest of the story (I realize that this was a comedy, but it ‘broke the spell’ for me). I would have liked the show to last a little longer - at 22 minutes, I felt we were just getting into the story and it was over.
The special features are thoroughly worth mentioning – especially Star Wars in 2 minutes part one and part two. My kids really loved this, as it was funny and quick paced (I liked it because it was really accurate and funny).
All in all, I would say this is a great family DVD for kids who like Lego, and who want to get into the Star Wars movies. It may not be so great for the parents watching with those kids.
Other special features on Lego Star Wars – The Padawan Menace Blu-ray DVD Combo include a Young Han Solo Lego figurine, The Quest for R2D2, Bombad Bounty, and The Clone Wars animated comic.
