The trailer for Colombiana makes it look like just another killer cutie out for revenge movie. Though Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) is a very cute woman killing those who wronged her in the past, this action DVD rises far above the fray.
Colombiana is the story of a young girl whose parents are killed by a drug lord. She escapes to America and finds shelter at her uncle’s. Fifteen years later Cataleya is a contract killer who signs her kills with a drawing of an orchid. The FBI finally releases the picture to the press and the drug lord goes after Cataleya which is what she wanted in the first place.
The story is somewhat more complex than that but not enough to take away from the action sequences and there are quite a lot of those. The pacing in this movie is excellent so it really does not feel just under two hours long.
The one weak point is the actor playing Cataleya’s boyfriend and the actor playing the CIA agent look very much alike so you are at first distracted by the possibility the boyfriend is double-crossing her.
One wishes director Olivier Megaton had used the action skills he shows here for his Red Siren / La sirene rouge (2002), a book that deserved a much better movie.
