Citizen Kane 70th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray
Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore
Directed by Orson Welles
Released 1941
Warner Home Entertainment 2011

It is hard to say which of the Blu-ray Citizen Kane 70th Anniversary Warner Brothers releases is a fan’s best bet. This one is in book form with a few pages about the movie and the DVD of The Battle Over Citizen Kane, the 1995 American Experience Oscar winning documentary. The Ultimate Collector’s Edition also includes RKO 281. The 2 DVD set has Kane and the documentary on two DVD. Considering Blu-ray and remastering can only do so much with a 1941 movie the decision becomes one that is price oriented.

Citizen Kane was voted best film of the 20th century. The commentary tracks by Roger Ebert and Peter Bogdanovich help understand why. The Battle Over Citizen Kane is very informative also and the idea that Kane is as much about William Randolph Hearst as about Orson Welles himself is quite interesting.

The restoration is almost perfect though I think there is a weak point in one of the scenes where the reporter interviews Jed Leland in the hospital.

The 44-page book itself is interesting but reveals nothing fans of the movie do not already know.
