Hatfields & McCoys is a three-part five hour miniseries that aired on the History channel. It stars Kevin Costner as Anse Hatfield and Bill Paxton as Randall McCoy and features a solid supporting cast that includes Mare Winningham, Tom Berenger, and Powers Boothe. Hatfields and McCoys covers the twenty-five year or so feud. This 2 DVD set is a solid addition to the collection of any western or history fan.
Like other modern westerns, Hatfields & McCoys is very gritty and big on earth tones and dirt. It works quite well for this series. The show is also big on slow motion bullet wounds which are also the norm these days.
Episode 1 opens with Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy fighting side by side during the Civil War. Anse Hatfield returns home sooner than McCoy. His family continues to prosper while the McCoys find it hard. There is conflict over a deed to some land and logging rights, a couple of murders following some bar encounters, a story about a possibly stolen hog, and a romance between Randall's daughter Roseanna and Anse's son Johnse.
Episode 2 begins with Roseanna and Johnse's story. The feud escalates after a Hatfield is killed during a fight. By the end of the episode things have gotten so out of hand even the West Virginia and Kentucky governors are involved.
The last episode (DVD 2) of Hatfields & McCoys brings things to a bloody head swith the New Year's Eve massacre and the 1888 Battle of Grapevine.
Special features are rather thin.: A thirty-minute making of and a music video.
