Mainstream - The Incredible Mr. Limpet Blu-ray

The Incredible Mr. Limpet Blu-ray

Originally released 1964
Warner Home Entertainment 2012

Warner Brothers, home of the Looney Tunes and many Academy Award winning cartoons, released The Incredible Mr. Limpet in 1964. This live action and animated family movie starring Don Knotts is now available on Blu-ray. Mr. Limpet has aged well in terms of animation and story. This animated film is very much like the Disney productions of the time. Parents might have to explain a few things so children understand the historical context.

Knotts plays Henry Limpet, a mild-mannered bookkeeper who is declared 4-F a few months before the beginning of WWII. Limpet is a fish fancier whose wife does not approve of his hobby. Limpet's two greatest wishes are to help the war effort and be a fish. He, his wife, and their friend George (Jack Weston) go to Coney Island where Limpet falls in the water and gets his wish to be a fish.

He befriends a hermit crab named Crusty, soon discovers he can emit a supersonic belch, and meets a Ladyfish who is immediately interested in hitting the spawning ground with Limpet. When the US enters the war Limpet finds a way to help his country and becomes a hero.

The ending is a tad unsatisfactory.

The Incredible Mr. Limpet Blu-ray has not been remastered. Still, it looks pretty good but probably not a lot better than the DVD version. Special features include an  introduction by Don Knotts, a documentary on the release of the film, Mr. Limpet's Fish Tank (character sketches), and trailer.
