Whatever positive things you heard about Wonder Woman were understated. This is an action movie that redefines what you can do with the genre and raises the bar. True, a couple of the digital effects are on the obvious side but aside from that there is nothing that gets in the way of enjoying a great story with a kick ass main character and actress (Gal Gadot) as well as  a plot, subplots, and developments that make sense and can be easily followed, and surprises that really work.  All this with a strong supporting cast of well-defined and interesting characters. What also makes Wonder Woman an interesting action movie is there is no American Knows Best feel to it and the villains are not stereotypical.  As a bonus Wonder Woman is an action film young girls enjoy with a character they can look up to.

First, the backstory to Wonder Woman is smart and interesting without being didactic. We see young Diana growing up on the hidden island of Themyscira and displaying her strong will and desire to learn to fight like the best Amazon. When she has become the best of the Amazon warriors a WW1 Allied soldier (Star Trek's Chris Pine) accidentally breaches the protective bubble around Themyscira and reveals there is a world at war out there. Diana, convinced it is her duty to kill Ares the god of war responsible for the war to end all wars and mankind's inability to find piece, sets out to early twentieth century London and the battlefields around Belgium to accomplish her mission.

There is some comic relief from Diana's innocence about things human such as the relationship between men and women and the proper dress code for the period. This innnocence also serves to make Wonder Woman a lot more interesting than the muscle bound superhero we are used to. There are also many instances where Wonder Woman's skills are put to the test which means lots of really well choreographed action scenes that never feel imposed on the plot itself.

The final showdown is one hell of an action scene with a couple of very surprising plot developments to boot.

I am normally allergic to movies that clock in over two hours but all 141 minutes of Wonder Woman are interesting and serve the movie.
