Just to put it into perspective: This reviewer sat through Ecks VS Sever twice and has seen Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes, Plan 9 From Outer Space, The Terror Of Tiny Town and Walter Koenig's Moon Trap! All this without complaint.
Jules Verne was a creator ahead of his time. His speculative fiction is some of the best ever written and has stood the test of time very well. It could not stand the test of Rusty Lemorande and the cast of never weres that eviscerate the story in this 1989 remake of the Verne classic.
Before turning his hand to Journey To The Center Of The Earth, Lemorande was best known for his writing of the screenplay for Michael Jackson's Captain EO. Lemorande himself backpedaled from his directorial credit on this movie pointed out that he only had control over the first 8 minutes. That really doesn't excuse him from the crime.
This movie has no redeeming features whatsoever. None. Bupkus. Nada. The acting is painful, the blocking is atrocious, cinematography and direction are afterthoughts. The special effects are so bad that they aren t even reminiscent of effects done in the 1959 version of the movie because those were better executed. This doesn't even qualify as a third rental. You have been warned.
