Ever since Vince Gill introduced him at the CMA show by saying “ you always know what you are going to get from Alan Jackson” Alan Jackson has taken his music in new directions. First with the release of Precious Memories a collection of old time hymns that he originally recorded as a gift to his mother and more recently the release of Like Red on a Rose.
This latest CD was produced by Alison Krause one of the foremost singers of blue grass and her touch has certainly created an Alan Jackson album unlike any of his others. Most definitely not your standard Country Top 40 fare. At first listen the album is such a departure from his normal honky tonk sound that it seems disappointing. The songs are not really the type that you would sing or hum along with but the combination of the blues and country is really quite unique. After a few listens the tracks start to grow on you and you really feel the emotion being expressed.
The songs which really stand out include “ Where Do I Go From Here”, “Bluebird”, Don't Change On Me” and “A Woman's Love”.
If you are an Alan Jackson fan this CD deserves your attention but listen to it with an open mind and don't give up on it too quickly. It will grow on you.
