Corpse Bride is a stop-motion gothic horror comedy that simply blows you away. The animation is flawless and, thanks to some secondary computer animation for those little touches here and there, makes the movie lifelike. It is about life and death. The dead are lively, colorful folks while the live people are generally gray grotesques. There is a Dickens meets South America folklore feel to Corpse Bride that makes it exceptional.
Victor Van Dort (voiced by Johnny Depp) has been set up to marry Victoria Everglot (voice of Emily Watson) The Van Dorts, fishmongers, hope to increase their social status while the formerly wealthy Everglots want to recapture their former wealth through this union. The groom, who manages to fall in love with his bride-to-be in exquisite piano-playing scene, has difficulty with his lines during the wedding rehearsal (the sinister minister is voiced by the great Christopher Lee) and sets fire to his future mother-in-law. He runs away to the forest where he proposes to a tree limb that is in fact the arm of the Corpse Bride.
The Corpse Bride, who is the envy of any anorexic chick, discovers Victor’s heart belongs to another woman, tells her story of woe, and fights to keep Victor and the various body parts she keeps losing. The story gets a little complicated after that but since this is a Tim Burton movie (James and the Giant Peach, The Nightmare Before Christmas) you never lose track of what is going on. This is a really good thing because Corpse Bride is such a visually stunning movie that it almost overtakes your visual senses to the detriment of your ears.
The musical numbers by Danny Elfman are brilliant, especially those in the underworld.
Corpse Bride is a great love horror movie that even smaller kids can enjoy with some adult supervision.Extra features include Inside the Two Worlds, Danny Elfman Interprets the Two Words, The Animators: The Breath of Life, Tim Burton: Dark vs. Light, Voices From The Underground, Making Puppets Tick, The Voices Behind The Voice, The Corpse Bride Preproduction Galleries, Theatrical Trailer, Music-only track (the entire movie without the sfx and voices).
