The Exorcism of Emily Rose is about a rising star lawyer (Laura Linney) who decides to take on a case of negligent homicide by a priest (Tom Wilkinson) who performed an exorcism on a young girl. The Exorcism of Emily Rose recounts the true life story of Emily Rose (played by Jennifer Carpenter), a 17 year old, who was the target of demonic forces that would terrify her family and community.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose has all the elements to be a hit: supernatural phenomena, evil demons, a court trial, and the battle of good against evil all wrapped up in a true life story premise. This epic-like movie will certainly not disappoint the viewer. However, this movie does not fall in to the normal category of suspense/ horror movies as we know them. In the movie, Father Moore says: “Emily’s story must be told.” And, in fact, it is with this frame of mind that the movie was produced. Rather than having a story in which weird events occur and build up to a climax, we come in to the movie knowing that Emily was possessed and that the people telling the story have witnessed strange things. Therefore, each time a witness takes the stand, we expect to see something that will leave an impression on us. This is how we see the evolution of Emily’s condition. Nevertheless, the story makes for some gripping and frightening scenes.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a journey through the life of a young woman who suffered the torments of evil. It is also a journey through the notion of faith and how we respond to the supernatural or the unknown. The movie allows the viewer to observe and think about this story. This is definitely a movie that should be seen by people who are interested in this type of occurence .
