The Thing is hiding in a video store near you! Before the plotless, slasher mega-gore flicks like Saw and Hostel there were horror movies with plots and storylines. Periodically Hollywood does a genre movie and gets it right. In his hey day John Carpenter had a knack for getting good actors, good scripts and big budgets to make his brand of suspense horror that is rarely made anymore: The Thing was just such an achievement.
Starring a young, bearded Kirk Russel and a host of character actor stalwarts like Wilfred Brimley and Keith David The Thing takes Invasion Of The Body Snatchers to the next level complete with scientific explanations and computer simulations. For the time frame (1982) this was all cutting edge science and special effects. The level of puppetry skill required by the animatronics people in The Thing is stunning. Everything about The Thing works despite the reservations a first time horror viewer might have about a star cast and a big budget. This is solid story telling in the science fiction horror subgenre.
The Thing is a must see both for horror fans, SF fans and most especially for Carpenter fans.
