Roseanne was a ground-breaking ABC network situation comedy that overstayed its welcome by a couple of years. Still, this white trash blue collar had some really great moments and the Halloween shows were always the highlight of each season. The Roseanne Halloween show was even more must see TV that the Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror special. Roseanne Halloween Edition DVD includes seven shows from seasons 2 to 8.
The Conner clan really got into the Halloween and Roseanne Halloween Edition features some of the best of this situation comedy's shows on that theme. Boo! Has Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) and Dan Conner (the underrated John Goodman) trying to outprank and outscare each other. She pretends she is getting electrocuted, he pretends he cut himself and is squirting blood, until the final face-off where Dan admits Roseanne is the master prankster.
Trick or Treat is the lesser episode on Roseanne Halloween Edition. Roseanne dresses as a guy, gets stuck at the Lobo Bar, and mingles with the guys. It's funny but not up to the usual gross-out standards of the seasonal special. Trick Me Up, Trick Me Down has Dan and Roseanne do a show as Deadger Bergen and Mortician Snerd. Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) and Crystal (Natalie West) both dress up as Elvira, or Morticia, or is it Cher. Roseanne is also rather paranoid about why stick in the mud and up her butt neighbor Bonnie is at the Moose Lodge party.
Halloween IV is the Roseanne Halloween show where Roseanne has lost her holiday spirit and in a cross over with Dickens' A Christmas Carol, gets visits of the ghosts of Halloween past, present, and future. Halloween V is low on blood and gore in terms of Halloween shows but still pretty decent. Dan (John Goodman) pulls one on his wife and Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and David (Johnny Galecki) get her mother real good.
In many ways, Roseanne might have been a white trash blue collar comedy but it was never afraid of dealing with real stuff and living in a real world. Skeletons in the Closet is the gay-themed Halloween special where David tries to explain to D.J.(Michael Fishman) what gay means and Roseanne starts to think Jackie's husband (Michael O'Keefe) is gay.
Halloween: The Final Chapter is not a classic episode by far but it does feature a cameo by Sarah Chalke (Becky number 2) as the mother of two trick or treaters and some pretty funny trick or treaters. This is also when Roseanne gives birth to kid number 4, Jerry Garcia Conner. It is the second weakest episode in this compilation of this white trash blue collar sitcom Halloween specials even if it includes clips from Halloween pasts.
If you really really really want to waste your time, you will watch the split screen commentary episode Trick Me Up, Trick Me Down where Roseanne Whatever does a commentary on the Halloween shows. I have never heard a commentary track where the star was as bored as she was doing it.
