Final Fantasy VII – Advent Children is one of the most beautiful CG animated movies I have ever seen. The colours are a little washed out and bleak but that is part of the narrative and setting for the movie. The beauty is in the lines and motion of the characters which is even more detailed than it was in the first cinematic release of the movie version of Final Fantasy.

DVD - dual set Done in the anime style of story telling Final Fantasy VII Advent Children is really a movie of aficionados of the Final Fantasy gaming series. Non gamers will be swamped with references to characters, plot lines and previous events that the movie only makes a partial effort to explain (more like remind the fan moments). These references do not make the movie unwatchable but they do give the uninitiated viewer an odd sense of watching an already disjointed story with more pieces missing than is really necessary.

The story in a nutshell is of the hero Cloud Strife who is called back into service to do battle with the descendents of Jenova/Sephiroth. These three young men (Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz) embrace the geostigma and seek to bring together all the children of the geostigma and the remains of Jenova to bring Jenova back to life. There is a haunting desire among all the geostigma sufferers to see and be loved by Mother. The myth arch of Final Fantasy contains the “fact” that all Jenova’s cells carry her will and some of her power even when separated from her. All those with the geostigma have been infected with Jenova’s cells.

Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz are the genetic remnants of Sephiroth the greatest hero in the history of the universe who had only ever lost one battle that being to Cloud Strife. This is definitely a fan based movie with little appeal outside of that group of people – though that group is quite large as the Final Fantasy franchise has been a juggernaut in the gaming world for years.

There are additional bonuses to this package that make it very collectible. The second DVD has a lot of extras including the anime movie Last Order Final Fantasy VII which is definitely worth watching. The making of featurette is another feature fans will enjoy. In addition there are ten postcards, a copy of the script and a novelized version of the movie. As a whole the Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Limited Edition Collector’s Set really falls into the realm of the must have for Final Fantasy fans.
