Science Fiction - Alien vs Predator - Requiem Unrated

Alien vs. Predator - Requiem
Aliens, Predators, Puny Humans
Directed by Colin Strause, Greg Strause
20th Century Fox 2008
101 minutes

Alien vs Predator Requiem should have been titled The St. Paddy's Day Creature Feature. Note to the Strause brothers: lighting everything green and I mean everything makes for a damn hard to watch movie on any size TV which is where Alien vs. Predator will be most screened. This approach is about as effective as filming in black and white and lighting the set with an aromatic candle. Those who remember Colecovision or the 8088 and playing games on monochrome screens will recognize a lot of this movie and the ensuing headache. It is enough to make a viewer feel ... jade-d.

As a DVD aimed at the SF testosterone crowd Alien vs. Predator Requiem is an experience --from what you can see of it.  Stuff happens in a very green environment. Spaceship. Planet earth. Very green forest. Alien thing takes out hunter and son in a vey green forest. Meanwhile: ex con who is really a good guy according to local cop gets back to town and has to deal with angry, rebellious little brother; mom returns from Iraq war to her green living room and brings back night vision goggles through which everything looks green; winos get alienated in a green lit sewer before some other big green thing goes after the Alien. Small Colorado town where everybody has a flashlight with a green beam gets caught in the middle of the bad monster's battle. There is also another big green thing with a Romulan cloaking device running around cleaning up the other space creatures' evidence.

I remember Alien as a cool movie with a story. There is not much story in Alien vs Predator Requiem. It is really a space monster movie heavy on action and thin on plot or characterization. The action scenes are probably pretty good if you can figure them out through the green stuff.

It is difficult to really caught up in this movie aside from the action scenes (tension, ominous music, human gets lunched) because the human characters are just types and simply potential meat for the Aliens. A good sci-fi or monster movie, even a B-movie, makes you care a bit about at least one character in it.
