NPR Holiday Favorites is quite entertaining (and a tad wee bit educational – in a good way). This 2 CD collection of seasonal items from various National Public Radio shows, mostly from 200 to 2007, features 29 stories that have either a feel good quality without causing diabetes or an oddity to them that make them fun to listen to. These really are NPR Holiday Favorites.
Of course, David Sedaris is included on this 2 CD set. Unfortunately, it is only the short version of Santaland Diaries. Amu Sedaris is also on this compilation as a guest on Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me.
Some of the items on NPR Holiday Favorites are more on the educational side. Mingle All The Way Through Holiday Parties features a social interaction expert giving tips on how to get in and out of conversations at office parties. A bonus is it is also humoristic.
The feel good piece is Thanksgiving Day Cab Ride. It is the story of a cabbie with a golden heart and a hole in his pants. I wish the story had a better closure though. Also there to give you the warm fuzzies is Repaying a Christmas Favor.
One of the oddest items on Holiday Favorites is Santarchy (disc 2) about a pub crawl by people dressed like Saint Nick. That this happens in more than one place on the planet is odder.
Somewhat disappointing is Father Sarducci’s Absolute Worst Holiday Song Ever. Only a bit of the song is audible and what Sarducci says in voice over is banal. The song itself is 100 lights on the Christmas tree and so on. Definitely boring is The Worst Gifts Ever. It would only take you 5 minutes to find 20 people with funnier stories.
Interesting and funny, though it tries a bit too hard, is Mixed Families Set to Celebrate Chrismukkah on how Jewish/Christian homes mix the two.
With 29 different holiday moments, there's something for everybody here.
One thing I immediately noticed about NPR Holiday Favorites is there are a lot of people on NPR who do not have your standard radio voice. In fact, many of the voices on this CD are quite odd. It doesn’t take anything away from enjoying NPR Holiday Favorites.
