Marley & Me
Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Alan Arkin
Directed by David Frankel
Fox Home Entertainment 2009
110 minutes

Marley & Me is not as cloyingly sweet or as stupid as the previews might make you think. It is also not the dumb and cute dog kiddie movie the DVD seems to be marketed as. Marley and Me is about real adults with the occasional adult problem. Marley & Me is a family movie because it is about real people and, eventually, a real family. This DVD is not, however, something the kids should watch without an adult in the room. This movie may be 110 minutes long but the story and characters easily sustain that.

Jenifer Aniston and Owen Wilson give solid performances as Jenny and John Grogan, newly married journalists who move to Florida to start their life together. While waiting for conditions to be right to have a child, the Grogans decide to practice by raising a dog. Things do not quite turn out as they planned as Marley proves to have an incorrigible mind of his own. Life also plays a few tricks on the Grogans and the Grogans are real grown-ups which is why Marley and Me is not a kids’ DVD.

What I liked most about Marley and Me is it does not play down to the audience. The Grogans are not dumb yuppies and the dog is not idiotically luvable-wuvable or Beethoven style stupid destructive. It even takes a very long time for the first poop reference to show up. I also appreciate the fact director David Frankel does not let the movie go to the dog and instead tells a warm hearted, realistic story.

Oscar winner Alan Arkin is very good in the supporting role of John Grogan’s editor.

Based on a true story and sounding like a true story Marley & Me is a very entertaining and touching movie about genuine characters, something a bit too rare these days.
