Stargate Atlantis fans already know the backstory enjoy the 20 episode Stargate Atlantis DVD box set. Season 5 opens with some good guys trapped in a collapsed building and a pregnant woman prisoner of an obviously bad guy named Michael, leader of the Wraith. The Stargate Atlantis DVD set comes with a hell of a lot of bells and whistles in terms of special features including commentary tracks for each of the 20 shows, short features on aspects of the series, and deleted scenes
If you are new to the series, Stargate Atlantis takes a little getting used to. Once you get the few minutes you need to figure out some backstory (and wiki for Michael’s) the rest of the Stargate Atlantis DVD set is fun to watch. Many episodes recall past events but lack of that knowledge doesn’t usually get in the way much.
Season 5 opens with a baddie on the run, a birth, and a new boss. Episode 2 will be familiar ground to science fiction fans as a plant of some sort takes over a crew member and the Stargate staff must find a cure before it is too late. Other shows feature an old nemesis who reappears and tries to convert one of the Stargate crew in a rather weak episode 3; a ghost ship from the future; ye olde parallel universes; a ghost crew and Replicators; a creepy horror movie style episode titled Whispers; ye olde stand trial for crimes against the galaxy; and, of course, the never really dead nemesis or nemesi.
The final season of Stargate Atlantis is generally quite good. There are a couple of weak episodes but that’s a pretty decent batting average for a science fiction show in its fifth season. The cgi and sfx are excellent in this science fiction series.
