300 The Complete Experience is a must for any fan of this Gerard Butler action movie. This is a very interesting looking movie filmed purposefully to reflect its graphic novel origins. The story is good, the acting is good, and the special effects are also good. Though this is a very recent movie, fans of this genre will certainly recognize the same formula used in the Steve Reeves Hercules and the Sinbad movies of the early 50s.
Butler plays Spartan king Leonidas who, with his merry men (sorry, wrong mythology) goes to battle king Zerzes and the massive Persian army who turns out to be generally as threatening as that of Iraq’s elite Republican Guard of Desert Storms I and II. Back home, Mrs. Leonidas (Lena Headey) must gather support from the Spartan council to back Leonidas and send reinforcements. Add the usual treachery and political conniving to the mix.
300 does try somewhat for some form of historical accuracy but scholars are still debating the percentage of that accuracy. Not that it matters. This is a Blu-ray action movie not a documentary on the Spartans.
This is a very testosterone heavy, real men are real men, grunt grunt kind of movie. It is also immensely enjoyable. Director Zack Snyder knows how to tell a story and make it visually interesting at the same time. The look of this film takes a minute or so to get used to but once you are in it you really appreciate this particular visual style.
There are not that many Blu-ray out there worth the extra buckage. 300 The Ultimate Experience certainly is one of them. The 32-page book it comes in is the usual stuff you get with this type of packaging. There are, however, a hell of a lot of extra features and these really exploit the Blu-ray format to its maximum.
