Torchwood - Children of Earth aka Season 3
John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Gareth David-Lloyd
Directed by Euros Lynn
5 Episodes 2 DVD
Broadcast BBC 2009
293 minutes

You do not have to be familiar with the mytharc to enjoy the special 5-part Children of Earth Torchwood DVD. All you have to know is Torchwood is a paragovernmental group that looks into alien manifestions and defends the earth. There is a connection to the Doctor Who series but here it is quite minimal aside from the Gwen character wondering where the Doctor is. If you like good SF with a strong commentary on present events, Torchwood Children of Earth is a science fiction DVD you will certainly enjoy.

Torchwood Children of Earth begins with all the children of the earth suddenly stopping as if they were clocks that had run out. A few minutes later they continue on with their lives as if nothing happened. These manifestations become more frequent and the children start communication a message: We are coming.

A British government bureaucrat, John Frobisher (an excellent performance by Peter Capaldi) and the British Prime-Minister seem to know what is going on. They also get the Special Forces to take out Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and the Torchwood team before they figure out what is going on. “They” is a species known as 456 that has made contact with earth before and Harkness was implicated in that contact. When government officials learn what the 456 want, they mound a vast conspiracy. Telling you more would be giving away too much information.

Suffice to say Torchwood Children of Earth shows how much of a Big Brother society Britain has become. There is also a very, very strong comment on the current H1N1 “flu pandemic” that you must admit is quite interesting and scary even if you are not by nature a conspiracy theorist.

A lot happens in terms of character development to the Torchwood characters. Again, saying much would spoil some plot elements.

The season 3 aka Children of Earth Torchwood DVD set is certainly worth the price.
