Mystery writer Alexander McCall Smith has a diary entry for each of the 7 episodes of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency Season One 3 DVD set. One can then safely assume the writer is pleased with the HBO adaptation of his very original mystery series. Rightly so. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency is an excellent series that will please sleuthers of every genre.
Set in Botswana, The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is the story of Mma Precious Ramotswe, a strong- willed and very smart woman who opens a detective agency with money her father left for her. She uses her intelligence, her humor, her ability to read people and situations to solve various mysteries and crimes, occasionally aided by a how to book on detecting.
This is a TV mystery series that is very very short on gunplay and long on observational skills and people smarts. This is a welcome change when it comes to this genre. HBO has been able to keep the tone of the novels and, by filming in Botswana, the nature of the series and characters themselves.
As The No. I Ladies’ Detective Agency Season 1 progresses various characters and situations evolve. This is especially true of Mma Ramotswe’s secretary Grace Makutsi (Anika Noni Rose) who slowly develops her own detecting skills and by the end of the series takes on a case or two.
Each of the 7 episodes on this TV mystery DVD set features three crimes or whodunits to solve, usually one major and two lesser. Though the pilot episode is really big on National Geographic style shots of Botswana, the series quickly focuses on telling a good tale and good characters.
This is a very original, very good, and fun to watch series.
