Fringe sure looks great on Blu-ray. Many have positively or negatively compared this sci-fi crime series to X Files: investigating the unexplainable and often gory events created by great special effects. If you like good sci-fi TV, Fringe is a decent show that gets better as it goes along in terms of story. Stylistically it is superb right from the pilot. Fringe The Complete First Season features 20 episodes on 4 Blu-ray discs.
The set-up for this crime science fiction series is FBI Agent Dunham (Torv), mad scientist Walter Bishop and his genius son Peter (Joshua Jackson), and a junior FBI agent look into some really weird stuff. Some of it is connected to Bishop’s work before he went to the loony bin, some of it may or may not be connected to a company started by Bishop’s former research partner and something ominous called The Pattern.
Fringe makes willing suspension of disbelief easy with great special effects and original filming. It sometimes tugs hard at it: in the pilot episode Scott calls Dunham to say he is in pursuit of a suspect and Dunham knows which direction he is chasing the baddie. Actors Anna Torv, Kirk Acevedo, and especially Lance Reddick (Broyles of Homeland Security) are weak in the first few episodes.
The stories themselves are quite original and smart: a plane lands by itself and everybody on board is dead, a serial killer is surprised when is victim-to-be gets pregnant and has contractions before his eyes, people on a city bus become so many amber bugs,a strange cylinder, and so on. Oh, and a bald guy too.
Those who enjoy mystery science fiction and scary stuff will enjoy the DVD set or Blu-ray set of Fringe The Complete First Season. The show is pretty good from the start and Torv’s, Acevedo’s, Reddick’s acting improve as the series progresses. There are certain scenes however that are not for the queasy.
