The Green Mile is one of the three best Stephen King screen adaptations. The other two being The Shawshank Redemption, which was also directed by Frank Darabont, and Dead Zone with Christopher Walken. This is a story about life and death, kindness and cruelty, and the human condition. The Green Mile Blu-ray digibook is a very good addition to any Stephen King fan’s collection and to the Blu-ray collection of any fan of good human drama.
Paul Hanks is excellent as Boss Edgecomb, the head guard at Louisiana’s death row. Howell runs a tight but humane ship and most of his colleagues are also good men. The exception is Percy Wetmore who has a mean streak in him. The convicts are there for a good reason. John Coffey (a great performance by Michael Clarke Duncan who was nominated for an Academy Award) is on death row for killing two little girls.
Boss Edgecomb discovers Coffey is a very unusual man. This makes him question some of the things he sees and has to do. He also starts to question exactly who John Coffey is. Edgecomb is also close friends with the prison warden, played by James Cromwell. The warden’s wife has brain cancer. This comes to play a role in the overall story of this Stephen King movie adaptation.
This Blu-ray drama is told in flashback by Paul Edgecombe who is now in a retirement home. In the end, there is a reveal of the price he paid for working the Green Mile
