Now on Blu-ray, Lethal Weapon is the Mel Gibson, Danny Glover cop buddy movie that went on to spawn 3 sequels. This is a mix of a violent action movie and buddy comedy in which director Richard Donner manages to make both work at the same time. Not being enough of a fan of the Lethal Weapon franchise to know any better, I cannot say if Lethal Weapon Blu-ray is the Director’s Cut for sure but it probably is not. Special features are deleted scenes and that’s it.
Greg Gibson, who has an on and off Aussie accent here, plays Martin Riggs, a rather psychotic cop. Danny Glover is homicide detective Murtaugh who gets Riggs as his new partner. Murtaugh and Riggs have a few adventures while they investigate the suicide – murder of a young woman who happens to be the daughter of one of Murtaugh’s army buddies.
This opens a big can of worms and soon the extremely well organized and resourceful bad guys, including Gary Busey, go after Murtaugh and Riggs. This of course sets up some pretty violent and some cool scenes where people get shot and stuff blows up. An excellent one involves a helicopter and a stretch limousine.
Gibson and Glover have great screen chemistry and this is what really pushes Lethal Weapon above the bar of cop or buddy movies.
I am not convinced Lethal Weapon Blu-ray is worth getting. The pic quality is probably a bit better but we are talking about a 20 some year old movie here. I’d wait for the 25th Anniversary Super Duper Magic Amazing Edition.
