Godzilla Blu-ray

Directed by Roland Emmerich
Originally released 1998

139 minutes

Godzilla is a monster. I don’t mean the lizard but the movie. At 139 minutes, this monster movie tests the viewer’s patience and that is why it did not do that well in theatres. It does manage to entertain. Godzilla Blu-ray features the movie in 2:40:1, the one with the black bars, and fairly lame special features.

Godzilla is two movies in one. The first is Godzilla’s beginning and arrival in New York City. The second movie is what happens after Dr. Snofalopagus gets canned because his ex-girlfriend stole information from him. There is also the fact this creature feature tries to be both a monster movie and funny and both do not mix very well. Or it could be Godzilla is about the monster but also about the relationship between cub reporter Audrey and her scientist ex-boyfriend Dr. Whateveratus.

The movie could also have done without one of the two fish bait encounters and a few other things.

Godzilla is also subpar because director Roland Emmerich chose to have the showdowns at night. This means you get a grayish lizard and darkish buildings, army men, and army toys on a bluish gray background. Much more successful is the underwater encounter. Even with a crisp Blu-ray picture this is a real problem.

Things do pick up when the movie adds MSG to the mix.

Godzilla Blu-ray is for fans only.
