Based on the Stephen King Novella

The Shawshank Redemption is one of three truly great Stephen King film adaptations. The others are The Green Mile, also directed by Frank Darabont, and Dead Zone with Christopher Walken. No one who has seen this movie can not watch it again from time to time. In time for the holidays, Warner Brothers re-releases the 10th Anniversary The Shawshank Redemption 2 DVD set in a tin case. It makes a nice gift if you can find someone who does not already have a copy.

The Shawshank Redemption is a story about hope and human dignity. Andy Dufresne (a superb performance by Tim Robbins) is a wrongfully convicted banker sent for two consecutive life terms to prison. Shawshank is a tough world and outwardly Andy is not cut out for this place. He befriends Red (a great performance by Morgan Freeman), a guy who can get you anything behind the walls. Andy and Red become friends.

The story is told by Red and covers quite a long time. The movie is also a story about patience. For example, Andy sends a letter a day to the state government to get a library. It takes a long time but he finally gets what he wanted. What The Shawshank Redemption does not do is test the audience’s patience.  This truly is a superb drama.

There is something about this drama that makes you want a copy so you can watch it again from time to time.

This is one of very few DVD with a decent special feature. It is The Sharktank Redemption, a 25-minute film that transposes the main characters of The Shawshank Redemption to CMA, a Hollywood agency.

Special features on this Shawshank Redemption DVD are:Audio Commentary by Director Frank Darabont; Documentary: "Hope Springs Eternal: A Look Back at the Shawshank Redemption"; Documentary: "Shawshank: The Redeeming Feature"; "The Charie Rose Show" segment featuring Frank Darabont, Tim Robbins, and Morgan Freeman; Comic spoof: "The Sharktank Redemption"; Photo gallery; Storyboards; Theatrical Trailer; DVD ROM Web link
