100 Years of the Montreal Canadiens
4 DVD set
Warner Home Entertainment 2009

Of all the flotsam and jetsam on store shelves to mark the Canadiens de Montreal  100th anniversary the only must absolutely have is the 100 Years of the Montreal Canadiens DVD collection. This is a superb 4 DVD set that will reveal something new to even the most die-hard Canadiens fan. For example, Howie Morenz probably died because of medical malpractice. 100 Years of the Montreal Canadiens must be under the Christmas tree for any hockey fan. Oh yeah, Leafs suck!

100 Years of the Montreal Canadiens DVD 1 is the 2-hour oral history of the team mostly by people who were there. The beginnings are told by voice over and two team historians but after that you get Howie Morenz jr., Frank Selke jr,.Elmer Lach, Dick Irvin, Dickie Moore, Jean Beliveau, and so on. This was a brilliant decision as all these people or their father is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The English voice over is however incredibly lifeless. Somewhat annoying but you get used to it is the image itself. It is full screen but only ¾ so as on each side of the picture there is a mirror image of it.

DVD 2 of the Montreal Canadiens 100th Anniversary box set has features on each of the 24 Stanley Cups the team won. The commentary is done in English by the great Dick Irvin jr and by Richard Garneau. I could have done without the intro sequence at the beginning of each and every segment. Segments vary between 3 and 7 minutes in length.

Dynasties and Rivalries is the focus of 100 Years of the Montreal Canadiens 100th anniversary 3rd DVD. The Dynasties are of team of the fifties, the sixties, and the team of the seventies that won 6 including 4 in a row. The rivalries are the Quebec Nordiques, the Detroit Red Wings, the Boston Bruins, the Philadelphia Flyers of the seventies, and, yes, the Maple Leafs from long, long ago. The segments are again narrated by Dick Irvin jr. and Richard Garneau.

The fourth disc looks at The Legends, i.e. the Montreal Canadiens players who have had their jersey retired. This too is also well done.

There is also a deluxe edition 100 Years of the Montreal Canadiens DVD set. It features a 5th disc with The Mecca of Hockey, Untold Stories, and The Legends. It also features a team souvenir from the 100th season, a pin, 14 cards, and a photograph. The price is on the steep side for the deluxe edition.

Oh yeah, Leafs suck!
