WOW!  There is no other possible reaction to District 9. This is human meet alien science-fiction like you’ve never, ever seen before. Director Neill Blomkamp, who also co-wrote, brings new life and new dimensions to a tired genre by rewriting the rule book. District 9 is not Hollywood action hero blow alien things up movie. This science fiction movie is going to be a yardstick for years to come.

It is very hard to describe District 9 without revealing anything and this is a movie that deserves to be discovered on its own terms. You should not read on until you have.

Sharlto Copley plays Wilkus, a paper pusher for an armament company named MNU. A while back aliens landed near Johannesburg, South Africa. They are now living in a shanty town. Wilkus is head of the MNU task force in charge of moving the aliens to another shanty town further away from the city. Stuff goes badly. One of the aliens is named Christopher (Jason Cope) and plays an important part in the story.

This science fiction DVD bears repeated watching. In part to better understand the more subtle elements of the story, in part to listen to the interesting director’s commentary (also available in subtitles, something that should be de rigueur on DVD and Blu-ray releases), and in great part because it is such a brilliant movie.
