Last Action Hero is an action movie like no other. It is also a comedy like no other. It is in fact both. Last Action Hero is an action movie that pokes fun at the genre while firmly believing it is the real deal. It is a bit too long at over 2 hours but most of it is so entertaining it hardly matters. The Blu-ray version of Last Action Hero has no special features whatsoever aside from Movie IQ via BD Live. A couple of the scenes are also very grainy.

Jack Slater (Schwarzenegger) is an action movie character. In the middle of a great and very violent chase scene he finds young Danny in the back seat of his car. It turns out Danny is from the real world and crossed over into his hero’s movie thanks to a magic theater ticket. Danny has a hard time convincing Jack he is not real and his world is just movie magic. This is roughly the first half of the movie.

Last Action Hero pokes fun at the conventions of the genre while also using them to their maximum. It also features quite a few nods at other movies including E.T., Bergman’s The Seventh Seal, and, of course, Terminator and Terminator 2.

Things get weirder when the villain in the fourth Slater movie discovers the movie ticket and its properties. This leads to Schwarzenegger-Slater trying to save Schwarzenegger from a villain from a past Slater movie. It gets even more fun after that.

It is unfortunate Last Action Hero Blu-ray does not have a special feature that indicates the various movie references and inside jokes. It would have made watching this action movie spoof that much more fun.
