Which Way Home is an HBO Documentary about illegal child immigration to the United States. Each year, more than 100,000 unaccompanied children try to cross the U.S. border to either find a parent or build a better life for their family back home. This very good documentary airs January 24 2010 at 10 P.M. on CBC’s The Passionate Eye.
Which Way Home follows different boys as they try to cross the border. Some like Kevin and Fito are on their way, some like Juan Carlos have already been caught by Mexican authorities and are at a temporary detention center before being sent home, a couple such as Francisco have made it across.
The documentary is unusual in that there is no narrator or voice over. This allows the viewer to have an unbiased view on the topic. The only commentary is that of the filmmakers asking the children questions, that of the children themselves, or that of various authorities. Surtitles are used to provide necessary information.
No aspect of this topic is left unaddressed in this documentary including the repatriation process for the bodies of those who do not make it across.
Most of the migrants are boys but there are a couple of girls. It would have been nice to know a bit more about them and what happened to them though a story told by one of the boys leaves little doubt.
