Ricky Gervais’ The Invention of Lying is premised on a lie. This human comedy posits a world where nobody can lie but presents a world where everybody voices every single thought. There is a difference between telling the truth and not voicing it. This takes nothing away from enjoying The Invention of Lying Blu-ray. This is an original and enjoyable movie.
Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) is a film writer. Movies in this world consist of a guy in a chair reading the factual story of things like forks, etc. Bellison is in charge of the 13th century, best known for the Black Plague. Unsuccessful, he gets fired and kicked out of his apartment on the same day. When he goes to the bank to withdraw his savings he lies about how much money he has and gets it. Bellison discovers that everybody will believe everything he says because since everybody tells the truth it must be true.
Bellison accidentally becomes a messiah figure. More fun and interesting stuff happens.
The Invention of Lying is not perfect. There is a love interest story that does not really work and takes away from the bite this human comedy could have had. Jennifer Garner is not particularly good here but her role is rather confused thus so is she.
The Invention of Lying is not as great as it could have been but it is highly entertaining and fun to watch.
