You cannot possibly do better as a comedy box set than the Mel Brooks Collection Blu-ray set. Nine of the 2000 Year Old Man's best titles, including the classics on Blu-ray and a 120-page book about Mel Brooks, his co-stars, and the movies in this comedy set. The movies are comedy greats, the packaging less so. The coffee table book style packaging is a bit cumbersome. Slipping the Blu-ray discs in their cardboard sleeves is a bit on the annoying side. Where this box set really fails is the book pages holding the discs tend to come unglued even before you open the box.
The Mel Brooks Collection 9 Blu-ray set includes The Twelve Chairs, Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, To Be or Not to Be and the Alfred Hitchcock homage and spoof High Anxiety. It also includes these other comedies
Silent Movie is a brilliant comedy and homage to the silent film era. There is a music soundtrack but only one word is only spoken. It is a movie within a movie as a washed out director (Mel Brooks) sells the idea of making a silent movie to a modern studio head (Sid Caesar). The movie includes, believe it or not, English subtitles.
Young Frankenstein stars Gene Wilder as a comic spoof and black and white homage to Universal's monster movies from the thirties and forties. It is also amazingly faithful to the Mary Shelley novel. It also stars Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, and
History of the World Part 1 is in my opinion a comparatively lesser comedy. Still Mel Brooks' take on the caveman, Moses, the Roman Empire and the Last Supper, and the French Revolution is pretty funny.
Robin Hood Men in Tights is a tip of the hat and spoof to the Errol Flynn classic. Spaceballs is a lesser comedy that pokes fun at Star Wars before it became a prequel sequel. The Twelve Chairs (1970) is Mel Brooks' second movie and his least known comedy.
To Be Or Not To Be has Brooks and Ann Bancroft playing a couple of theatre people in WW II Poland. The movie is hit and miss comedy wise.
